I Shot a Horse... | Mt Bromo Photography | Nikon Z8

I travelled to Indonesia, more specifically East Java, Surabaya & Bali with some friends for some travel and landscape photography in August this year.

On the first day, we went near Mt Bromo and engaged some locals to let us photograph their family, a horse, and nice little campfire.

The Nikon Z8 undergoes a real challenge on this shoot as the photos were taken in near-darkness against a brilliant sunset. In order to preserve the highlights, my Straight-Out-of-Camera images look really dark but that gave me the exposure latitude to ensure nothing is blown out. The Z8's dynamic range proves up to the tasks as the final images worked really well!

Nikon Z8, Z 24-120MM F4 S, ISO640, 24mm, f4.5, 1/125s

Nikon Z8, Z 24-120MM F4 S, ISO640, 110mm, f5.6, 1/125s

To show my readers how dark the original image is, here’s the shot “straight out of camera”. It was photographed intentionally this way so that the highlights are preserved, while shadow detail is drawn out in post. As you can see, this is the original image and no sky-replacement or other shenanigans are involved. The Nikon Z8’s dynamic range is really impressive.

FPV drone footage and some clips from the ever-fantastic (IG handle) @Teddgoh. Thank you for the awesome work!
